Sometimes you just want to buy a simple easy to use piece of equipment that doesn’t cost a fortune but offers you enough features to do the job.
The CDN probe thermometer with calibration capability fits into that category, it’s low cost, does just what you need in the kitchen and can be recalibrated so you can be assured that you are going to have an accurate thermometer at all times.
CDN probe thermometer overview
What are the main features of this thermometer
This CDN DTQ450X Digital ProAccurate Instant-Read Thermometer is a digital probe type thermometer that can be used for any food. This is very useful for grilling if you like to bbq, it’s easy to check your steaks and burgers with a probe thermometer, the sensors are in the tip of the probe so it can manage thinner cuts of meat. The probe is 5 inches long which is made from 304-grade stainless steel, a higher quality than with many thermometers and has a 1.5mm thin tip for a rapid response to changes in temperature and it can easily probe thicker cuts of meats too.
The digital readout is in a shatterproof and waterproof stainless steel housing which makes it strong and durable which is useful in a kitchen when it can easily be dropped or knocked off a worktop. The stainless steel makes it easy to clean too, either with a damp cloth or with CDN PW200 Thermometer Probe Wipes which will stop cross contamination if you are checking different meats.
The digits on the readout are large and easy to read and give a steady readout after 5-8 seconds. All the control buttons are on the face, there is an on/off switch so it’s easy to turn on when you want to use it but it you forget to turn off the thermometer afterwards it does have an automatic shut off after 10 minutes to preserve the battery life. This instant read thermometer does not have a moveable head so it might be more difficult to read the face when you have to place the probe in the thick of the meat so the hold button is there to keep the temperature locked in while you get a chance to read it properly. If you want to read your temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit you can toggle between them with the button on the front.

This digital thermometer comes with a plastic sheath with a pocket clip so you can safely store your thermometer in your pocket while in the kitchen and it’s not too big to store in the cutlery drawer in between uses. The plastic sheath also has a meat temperature guide printed on it if you’re not sure what temperature you should be aiming for when cooking your meat and the differences required if you want it rare, medium or well done.
The thermometer is powered by a LR44 lithium button battery which is included in the pack and it’s easy to change out when required.
CDN thermometer calibration
The main feature offered on this instant-read probe thermometer different to what is normally offered is the calibration option. Most probe thermometers come already calibrated from the factory and that can’t be changed so if it doesn’t measure correctly or if it loses accuracy as time goes by you might just end off throwing it away but with this thermometer you have the chance to correct it whenever you check it and it doesn’t read exactly right. So how do you do this?
Most people check the accuracy of their thermometers by inserting into iced water, to re-calibrate you need to do the same, 3 parts ice to 1 part water. The temperature of iced water should be 32F so place the tip of the probe into the water without touching the sides or the bottom of the glass and give it a chance to settle on the temperature. If the temperature isn’t at 32F you need to press the C button on the face of the thermometer and hold for 2 seconds and that will reset it. If you’re worried that you might press that button by mistake when using it for cooking you can be assured that it will only change if the temperature that it is in is between 30-34F. So you can re-calibrate in 2 seconds.
Why choose this CDN thermometer?
If you’re just an average cook and don’t want to have anything too technical to use in the kitchen but you want something accurate enough to give you consistent results when you do use it then this CDN probe thermometer with calibration capability will definitely work for you. It’s reasonably priced and being able to re-calibrate it gives it some longevity. The NSF certification is respected by Chefs and regulatory agencies at all levels so you’re getting a well manufactured unit.
