CDN Thermometer Review
We hear so much these days on cooking more foods from scratch so that we don’t have additives included and it’s healthier, how it’s so much easier to make your own burgers or roast a joint of meat but they don’t mention how easy it is to make yourself ill if you don’t cook your meat well enough to kill off germs, but when you use a thermometer of any kind to measure for minimum safe cooking temperatures for cooking your meats you should always be able to consistently cook food that is safe and delicious for you and your family. It’s a small investment for a simple instant-read thermometer and a meat temperature guide but if you are seasoned meat connoisseur who can’t wait for the good weather to get out the grill then you may be looking for something a bit more sophisticated like a multi probe thermometer.
- Pocket-sized quick-read thermometer that’s great for measuring temp in thin cuts of meat, fish or poultry
- 5-inch stainless steel stem can get a reading in 6-8 seconds; stainless steel housing surrounding the digital readout
- Large-digit readout, data-hold capabilities, 10-minute auto-off, plastic sheath with pen clip
- Temperature range of -40 to 450 degrees F (-40 to 230 degrees C)
- Powered by LR44 button battery (included); backed by 5-year limited warranty
Your CDN DTQ450X comes with the battery already installed, it has a button battery LR44 which can be changed by removing the battery cover on the front with a coin, although these batteries last for a long time. If you forget to switch it off at the on/off button the auto shut off will happen after 10 minutes so you won’t use too much power.
There are 5 buttons on the front, an on/off button to bring up the display and to start it reading and there is a button for you to change from Celsius to Fahrenheit depending on which you prefer to work in. There is a hold button so you can lock in the temperature while you get it out of the meat, a max button that if you press will give you the maximum temperature reached, this can be re-set by holding the button for 3 second.
Finally there is the CDN thermometer calibration button, just hold the thermometer into a mixture of 3 parts ice 1 part water and press the cal button for 2 seconds, when you release it the temperature will show 32.0°F. This will only work if the temperature of the liquid is between 30 – 34 Fahrenheit to avoid it being recalibrated by accident.
The probe part of the thermometer is 5 inches long which will work for most larger pieces of meat although you may need protective gloves if you’re working in a hot oven because the temperature takes 6 – 8 seconds to stabilise.
The range of temperatures that can be read are between -40F to 450F and if you want to check the accuracy you can use a cup with boiling water or a cup of iced water to check against.
The digital read out has a large number display which is quite easy to read and the best thing about this digital probe thermometer is the fact that apart from the display housing the probe is stainless steel and the whole thing is waterproof and shatterproof if dropped.
There is a protective sleeve, which has temperature guidelines on, that you can place it in that has a pen clip to allow it to be placed securely in a pocket, it’s normally used by chefs so they can carry it around safely and have it to hand whenever it is required. You don’t need to use this but it useful if you are carrying it around so you don’t stab yourself.
There are no limits to where you can use this thermometer, if you want to check readings for water when making teas, milk for when you make yogurt or the internal temperature of bread or any other type of food.
This thermometer has almost 2000 reviews with 81% being 4 and 5 star out of 5. The main like on this item is the large display which makes it very easy to read.
The fact that it can be calibrated makes it worth having as it’s not a feature on many thermometers.
It works well for cooking his meats, checking liquid temperatures and most cooking projects.
The negatives are mainly the item stopped working after a couple of uses, the temperature not reading accurately and cdn thermometer calibration error in iced water.
If you’re on a budget and you don’t want to pay a fortune for a digital thermometer but you want something that does the job well and accurately, you want something that is designed to make it easy to read with big numbers , if you want something that has a long enough probe to be able to be used for large joints of meat as well as burgers or steaks then try this CDN probe thermometer, you won’t be disappointed.
