Buyers Guide – Important features to check for
The main reason for investing in a digital meat thermometer is so that you can cook your meat to the right internal temperature so you don’t give yourself or any of your family a stomach bug. You also want to cook an expensive piece of meat right so you have no wastage. When it comes to poultry it’s dangerous to undercook it and easy to overcook it and dry it out so a thermometer gets you consistent results. Being able to keep track of all of that from a distance takes away the chore of standing over a hot grill while your guests are enjoying each others company.
If you’re unsure about where to start check out these features so you can get the best digital meat thermometer for your situation
The accuracy of the thermometer is the main thing your looking for and the range of temperatures it can read within that accuracy means you can use it for many things. It’s important that you can measure the heat of your grill to the highest it needs to go to as well as monitor an accurate temperature in the meat so you can enjoy the whole experience of producing safe and succulent food.
If you’re investing in a wireless/bluetooth thermometer you need to know that it will work for the distance that your grill is kept from the house. Bluetooth thermometers offer the greatest flexibility with the amount of probes they can handle but the shortest range of connectivity at 150 feet or less. If you have connection issues with other bluetooth items in your home then a more basic wireless thermometer might offer you the best results and you will get a greater wireless range of 300 feet.
The price is usually the limiter in any purchase you have to make but cheaper isn’t always worth buying, the same as more expensive doesn’t always give you the best working product. You have to know what you want to measure and to know how many probes will work best for you. Multi-probe thermometers are usually more expensive but if you are looking to expand your outside cooking facilities then it might be an investment worth making. If you’re just looking for one or two probes then you have a much wider choice and therefore more choice in prices. Don’t forget to check out the customer reviews, if the majority of people are loving it there’s a good chance you will too.
Ease of use
If you find apps and smartphones hard to work then you might not like the bluetooth options but in the main you’re looking for an easy setup otherwise you won’t use it. The best things about app control is that they are constantly updating them so it could improve over time and they are usually pretty easy to use once set up. The wireless controlled thermometers can have a few less features but simple to use button control. If you’re more tech savvy then more bluetooth options are coming along every day, if not there are a lot of choices in basic wireless thermometers.
This is sometimes more difficult to tell just by looking at an item online and customer reviews are important to check to see what problems they’re seeing. The probes tend to be the parts that break the most so if it offers free replacement that might be a good deal over time. Longevity is important, you don’t want to be buying a thermometer every year. It’s worth looking at the warranties but also check if any buyers have had problems getting in touch with customer services otherwise it’s not worth anything. Don’t forget if you buy from Amazon.com you have 30 days to return the product if you have any issues so worth thinking about.
Checking the accuracy of your thermometer
If you want to know if your thermometer is reading the temperature accurately then set it into Centrigrade and place the probe into a glass of water with ice in it, make sure you stir it well. Don’t touch the sides of the glass and it should be reading 0C after a few seconds. Many offer accuracy to +/-1C. To check the other end of the spectrum get a cup of boiling water from the kettle and place the probe in that without touching any sides, this should be 100C.
No matter which thermometer you choose you can’t get away from the fact that wireless or bluetooth can make the best use of your time when you have a lot of grilling to do. The price ranges covered above should give you some choices no matter what your budget is but I would imagine if you are an experienced griller then the most probes will be what you’re looking for and there are cheaper options coming along all the time. Our top choice the iGrill2 Complete Master Kit we believe gives you the best quality for the price.
